Creative Uses for Garage Wall Hooks

Garage hooks can be an underrated way to help organize your space, allowing you to free up floor space, maximize wall storage, and keep important tools and equipment readily available. While tool hooks can be most commonly associated with hanging tools and long-handled rakes and shovels, they can also help store bikes, shoes and even weights. Keep reading to learn more about the types of garage storage hooks, different use cases and installation tips.

DIFFERENT USES FOR GARAGE HOOKS

There are plenty of ways to use tool hooks when organizing your garage. While some uses may seem obvious, here are a few others that you might not have thought about.

Bike Storage

Try hanging your bike horizontally or vertically on your garage wall to help free up floor space. Be sure to choose a heavy-duty tool hook that can accommodate the weight of your bike. Specific hooks made for hanging bikes are common, and often come with features that prevent scratches and dents and allow you to easily secure your bike without it falling. Gladiator brand offers a variety of bike hooks, like this Advanced Bike Storage 3.0, which has a push-lock mechanism that allows homeowners to quickly and securely hang bikes without any hassle.

Tool Hooks for Hand and Power Tool Organization

Keep your tools easily accessible and off the workbench by hanging them on your garage wall. Hand tools, like hammers and wrenches, can typically go on smaller tool hooks that require less capacity. When storing bigger power tools, such as a weed wacker, look to use bigger tool hooks with a heavier weight capacity, typically around 50 lbs or higher.

Lawn Equipment and Shovels

Organize your long-handled tools, rakes and shovels by hanging them along your wall. Get a bulky wheelbarrow out of the way by using a double hook, like the Dual Hook from Gladiator brand, to hang it on the wall. This can help keep these items easily accessible, especially when you need to quickly shovel or rake.

Extend your Mud Room

Use your garage as a mud room or extra storage for your current mud room. Garage hooks can hold jackets and scarves, while a hanging basket offers storage for hats and gloves for winter. A boot rack, like this one from Gladiator brand, can help store wet boots and shoes, keeping your floors clean. Or, keep your pet gear easily accessible with the Entryway GearTrack® Pack, perfect for hanging grab-and-go items.

Sports Equipment Storage

Hang up skis, fishing rods, helmets, bags and more with garage hooks. Try using a basket to help store those hard-to-hang items, like footballs, basketballs or even golf balls. Check out the Gladiator® Ball Caddy, which can hold up to nine full-size basketballs. Or, use a Gladiator® Tool Hook to hang up multiple baseball bats.

Home Gym Equipment

Using your garage as your gym? Garage hooks can be a great storage solution for dumbbells, kettlebells, weight plates and resistance bands. Use big baskets, like the 24” Wide Mesh Basket, to store yoga mats and foam rollers. You can even use two hooks to store large medicine balls, like this Wide Hook from Gladiator brand. Always double check your hook’s weight limit before using it to store heavy weights.

Extension Cords, Hoses and Ladders

Neatly store your extension cords and hoses by wrapping them around garage hooks. This can help prevent the tangles that occur when they are placed in a drawer or cabinet. You can also hang ladders vertically on a utility hook, like this one from Gladiator brand, to help free up floor space.

SELECTING THE RIGHT GARAGE STORAGE HOOKS

A garage hook can only be helpful if it is installed properly. Before installing your hooks, make sure you are choosing the right wall type and weight capacity for your hooks. Keep reading to learn about how different factors may affect garage hook installation.

Check Your Wall Types

Make sure you are choosing the right wall type for your hooks. Heavier garage storage hooks may require studs or anchors to support the extra weight. You may also want to install the hooks on a wall system rather than directly onto the wall. Select Gladiator® garage hooks are compatible with Gladiator® Wall Systems, so you can easily install and reposition those hooks as needed.

Some of the most common wall types in a garage include drywall, wood and masonry. Drywall is installed by nailing each sheet into wooden studs, leaving the wall hollow and thin between studs. Locate the studs before installing anything on your drywall. Otherwise, you may hit electrical wiring or end up with a less secure installation.

Wood and masonry typically do not rely on studs, so you’ll often have more flexibility in where you can install garage hooks. However, masonry may require hardwall garage hooks that can effectively grip the material. Try installing Gladiator® GearWall® Panels or GearTrack® Channels to your masonry for a secure foundation for your garage hooks.

Use the Right Weight Capacity

It’s important to use garage storage hooks with the right weight capacity. While small hooks can be great for lighter items, they might not be able to handle the load of something as heavy as a weed wacker. Be sure to double check your hook’s weight capacity before using. Take a look at some of the garage hooks that Gladiator brand offers, plus each hook’s weight capacity and potential usage ideas.

INSTALLATION TIPS
FOR MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY

Beyond choosing the right weight capacity and wall type, here are a few tips to ensure you’re getting maximum efficiency out of your garage hooks.

TIP 1: USE ANCHORS OR SCREWS TO HANG YOUR HOOKS.
Anchors and screws may not be necessary for every hook, but adding these items can help ensure that your hooks are fastened firmly to the wall.

TIP 2: CONSIDER THE SHAPE OF THE ITEMS YOU WANT TO STORE.
If you plan on hanging items horizontally, you’ll want to ensure that there’s enough room in between hooks. Similarly, make sure you have enough room above and below hooks if you plan on installing hooks on top of each other.

TIP 3: AVOID OVERLOADING HOOKS.
Even if your hooks can hold up to a certain weight amount, it’s important to not stack heavy items on top of each other. Distribute the weight properly to avoid overloading your hooks.
