Separate your piles into smaller groups. For example, create a pile of sports equipment then break it apart by sport. As the piles get better defined, you will begin to see what sort of hooks, bins and cabinets you will need for storage.

Have a test run If you are going to arrange odd-sized tools on hooks, try arranging them flat on the driveway before moving them to the hooks. This way you can try different arrangements by moving just the tool and not the hook. Use the label maker Once you've created a space for everything, label them. That way you'll know what is in every cabinet without opening it, and you won't have to try to remember where that wrench hangs. Keep it that way Once a year, revisit the garage. Look for items you thought about tossing last year-if you haven't touched them since then, let 'em go.
